The existing outdoor swim facility, which consisted of a diving pool, competition lap pool and non-swimmers pool, was integrated with the project to create an all-seasons recreation facility. Access from the existing parking area prescribed the location of the entry hall. From the entry, the circulation path moves sequentially through ticketing, changing rooms, lockers, and showers into the pool area. The pools are primarily enclosed with an arching, laminated wood structure. The cafe and sauna locations adjacent to the canal, maximize views for related sundecks. The lifeguard services are centrally located and the solar collectors occupy the southern edge of the facility.

The surrounding neighborhood consists primarily of social housing in a built environment that is utilitarian at best. The swimhall brings a sense of adventure and escape to local children and adults whose financial constraints limit their travel and experiences. This is accomplished through the use of abstracted form, which heightens individual interpretation and imagination.

The building de-sign integrates energy components including photovoltaic panels which shade roof decks and provide a substantial amount of electricity for lighting. South oriented roofing systems integrate solar collectors that provide heated water for the pools and preheat air for the mechanical system.

The interior of the swimhall is animated by the interlocking of various forms, which create distinct spaces for viewing diving competitions, dining, and access to the lifeguard observation room.

Existing open landscape areas were retained for sunbathing, beach volleyball, and playgrounds.
