This project for a prominent Los Angeles reprographics company provides renovation and expansion of an existing facility located at 1740 Stanford. Within the existing 18,131 square feet, upgrades were undertaken to integrate new machinery and technology to assure the companys competitiveness into the 21st century. An outdated black and white photo lab was replaced with a new electronic digital color photo lab. A new customer lounge and staff workstations were designed for the computer department. The new lobby features industrial skylights, exposed wood structure, and new finishes. An improved staff and customer circulation zone encircles display walls which feature products and services of the company. An expanded lobby and an improved front facade greatly enhance customer experience and public perception. The lobby includes a new customer waiting area, work area, and computer station for electronic correspondence and orders. The staff break and lunch room was refurbished with new cabinetry, appliances, and finishes. Toilets and circulation spaces were renovated and brought to code compliance. Upgrades were also provided in fire/life safety including a new sprinkler fire suppression system. New equipment and controls were provided for mechanical and electrical components. Dominant materials used for the project include: galvanized metal at the entry canopy, digital customer lounge, and public corridor; cast aluminum signage at the front facade; and clear glass in douglas fir wood frames at the lobby and digital customer lounge. The existing multi-colored exterior facade was visually simplified by the addition of red brick walls to match the aesthetic of the original brick warehouse. This neutral facade acts as a backdrop for the dramatic folded metal entry canopy and glass lobby. Artificial and natural lighting of the canopy surfaces enhances this architectural feature establishing it as a company icon for both day and night. |
